Some of the mistakes that are made by the new families regarding their finances are given. Overspending with credit, paying for unnecessary services, paying for duplicate services, not being conservation-conscious, not minding the media, spurning uncle Sam's gift, setting deductibles on homeowner's and car insurance policies too low, not getting the most mileage for the car, shopping on impulse and not sweating the small stuff are the mistakes made by the new families.

The competition trap

Parents compare the children when they are of the same chronological age, but develop skills at vastly different rates, as comparing helps them to figure out if their child is developing normally. However, helpful comparison could turn into hurtful competition, as one feels insecure when the comparisons imply that his baby is lagging behind.
