"You're fired!" (coping with unemployment) (Special Career Issue)

Article Abstract:

The experience of losing a job through termination ranks high among the stressful events that a person goes through. Future employment opportunities can be affected by how this situation is handled. Techniques presented for coping with firing or laying off include avoiding emotional outbursts, refraining from legal action against employer and telling a friend about the experience. It is also recommended that a fired or laid off employee should not shirk from social contact and avoid negative attitudes.

Furthermore, establishing new contacts and learning about significant local business issues provide a better edge to job seekers. Phone books also offer a vast list of potential contacts. Scheduling informational interviews with company managers and planning a follow-up visit to the city are likewise part of a well-planned job search.
