... And Britain pursues key role for 'users.'(European Commission's Fifth Framework on research and development)

Article Abstract:

The UK has proposed that the joint research funded by the Fifth Framework program of the European Union should be guided by the users, especially the business community. Research should fulfill the medium-term technological requirements of European business and enhance the quality of life. It proposes setting up advisory committees to suggest research priorities and topics. The UK position paper on the framework supports an increase in funding to processes that disseminate and utilize the results of the research projects. However, UK is against an increase in the Framework's budget.

Britain prepares to leave European fast-breeder reactor programme

Article Abstract:

Britain will withdraw its support from the European Fast Breeder (EFR) program, citing budget concerns and doubts about the new technology's economic feasibility. The EFR project could collapse altogether if the two remaining participants in it, France and Germany, decide to pursue only their independent programs. France's fast breeder program has been criticized for safety problems.
