A Parisian museum to be defended

Article Abstract:

Museums, such as Musee de l'Homme in Paris, are focussing on being more than galleries by displaying objects in a cultural context rather than as representations of aesthetic values. An important aspect of restoration of the museum in Paris is the reunion of disciplines of evolution and anthropology. Museums are providing the visitors information about origin and functions of specimens, and taking them on a preplanned course on the subject. The renovations are also motivated by the need to remain financially viable in the face of stiff competition from other cultural manifestations.

Article Abstract:

Evolutionary biologist Douglas Joel Futuyma was bestowed the 1997 Sewall Wright Award for his contribution to the biological sciences. He is especially known for his unique ability to synthesize across evolutionary biology, ecology and natural history, with his first grant proposal to the National Science Foundation proposing a synthesis of evolution and ecology. He is also admired for his social conscience, which is evident in his writings. Among his social-oriented writings include that which critiques unsupported claims of evolutionary and genetic bases of homosexuality.
