A giant impact origin for Pluto's small moons and satellite multiplicity in the Kuiper belt

Article Abstract:

The proximity of Pluto's satellites P1 and P2 to Pluto and Charon, is shown near-circular orbits in the same plane as Pluto's largest satellite Charon and their apparent locations in or near high-order mean-motion resonances, all result from their being formed from collisional ejecta originating from the Pluto-Charon formation event. Dust-ice rings of variable optical depths may form sporadically in the Pluto system and satellites may be found around other Kuiper belt objects.
