A higher power for insulin

Article Abstract:

The liver controls the glucose content in the body with the help of insulin hormone, which binds its receptor in the liver and directly inhibits glucose production. Studies showed that specialized ion channels called K(sub ATP) channels in the hypothalamus control glucose production and release potassium ions from cells in response to a drop in ATP, which provides energy for many cellular reactions.

Truncation of Kir6.2 produces ATP-sensitive K+ channels in the absence of the sulphonylurea receptor

Article Abstract:

Research shows that adenosine triphosphate activates ATP-sensitive potassium channels K-ATP if the sulphonylurea receptor SUR1 is not present on the inward-rectified potassium channel subunit Kir6.2. The data indicates that Kir6.2 becomes sensitive to sulphonylureas, diazoxide and mg-ADP in the presence of SUR1. This proves that the ATP molecule activates the Kir6.2 site rather than SUR1.

An SCN9A channelopathy causes congenital inability to experience pain

Article Abstract:

Three consanguineous families from northern Pakistan with extraordinary phenotype of a congenital inability to perceive any form of pain are examined. The analysis has suggested that the gene SCN9A is an essential and non-redundant requirement for nociception in humans, which has stimulated the search for novel analgesics that selectively target the voltage-gated sodium channel subunit.
