A large source of atmospheric nitrous oxide from subtropical North Pacific surface waters

Article Abstract:

Nitrous oxide is a trace gas which is increasing in concentration in the atmosphere. Its biogeochemical cycle has been closely scrutinized, but the nature and magnitude of sources and sinks are still being debated. Dual-isotope measurements of nitrous oxide were taken from the water column of the subtropical North Pacific Ocean. Nitrous oxide is depleted in (super15)N and (super18)O within the lower-euphotic and upper-aphotic zones, consistent with predictions of a near-surface isotopically depleted oceanic nitrous oxide source.

Reduction of soil carbon formation by tropospheric ozone under increased carbon dioxide levels

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrte that at 50% increased level of ambient concentrations of ozone and carbon dioxide, the rate of formation of total and acid-insoluble soil carbon are reduced by 50% relative to the amount entering the soil. Data point out that the plant productivity declines due to elevated ozone levels will lower soil carbon formation rates.
