A molecular photoionic AND gate based on fluorescent signalling

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the fluoroscence quantum yield of anthracene derivative molecule as a function of the concentrations of sodium ions and protons indicates the dependence of its operation as a two-input AND logic gate on the capacity of the molecule to select its input ionic signals into the appropriate site on being provided with a pool of protons and sodium ions (at concentrations chosen by the operator). Spectroscopic analysis of fluorescence signals from single molecules reveal a high output when both inputs (sodium ions and protons) are applied simultaneously on the receptor molecule and a low output when the other three input signal conditions are applied.

Electron transfer branches out

Article Abstract:

The increased synthesis of new molecules exhibiting multielectron redox reactions has made possible the production of molecules that serve as multielectron catalysts. These unique molecules include linear polymers, supramolecular species and dendrimers. The multielectron catalysts will find utility in the reduction of dioxygen to water or dinitrogen to ammonia in a manner that resembles enzyme-catalyzed biological reductions.
