A nice ring to the centrosome

Article Abstract:

Scientists seem to have finally found the solutions to the mysteries in cytoskeletal research. Two research papers have provided evidence showing that the gamma-tubulin ring complexes are microtubule nucleators that play a major role in microtubule nucleation. In experiments using unfertilized Xenopus eggs, the research showed that gamma-tubulins are located within the pericentriolar material of isolated chromosomes, but move to the minus ends when the microtubules are assembled.

Centractin is an actin homologue associated with the centrosome

Article Abstract:

A new actin-like vertebrate protein, called centractin, has been isolated. A complementary DNA clone of centractin was produced and found to agree with actin's amino-acid sequence 50% of the time. This agreement rose to 70% when conservative amino-acid changes were incorporated. Centractin appears to be common in tissues and in vertebrate species. Moreover, morphological and biochemical analysis of centractin linked it to the centrosomes.

Centrosome polarization delivers secretory granules to the immunological synapse

Article Abstract:

The roles of the actin and tubulin cytoskeletons in helping cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) for granule delivery to immunological synapse are examined. Results reveal that CTLs do not require actin or plus-end microtubule motors for secretion, but instead the centrosome moves to and contacts the plasma membrane at the central supramolecular activation cluster of the immunological synapse.
