A palaeotemperature curve for the Precambrian oceans based on silicon isotopes in cherts

Article Abstract:

A study shows that the silicon isotopic composition of cherts more than 550 million years old have shown systematic variations with age that support the earlier conclusion of long-term ocean cooling and exclude post-depositional exchange as the main source of the isotopic variations. A model of the silicon cycle in the Precambrian era has shown that the observed silicon isotope variations imply seawater temperatures changes from about 70 degree Celsius, 3,500 million years ago to about 20 degree Celsius 800 million years ago.

Extreme oxygen isotope ratios in the early Solar System

Article Abstract:

The origins of the building blocks of the Solar System can be studied using the isotopic composition of early planetary and meteoritic material. The discovery of abundant silica-rich grains embedded in meteoritic organic matter, having the most extreme (super 18)O/(super 16)O and (super 17)O/(super 16)O ratios observed together with a solar silicon isotopic composition is reported.
