A phosphate alternative

Article Abstract:

Trichdesmium apparently mines the organic phosphonate compounds in the ocean's dissolved phosphorus pool. A phylogenetic analysis is performed using sequence data from the phosphonate genes that encode the enzymes essential to break C-P bonds and the analysis shows that the C-P lyase enzymatic pathway required for phosphonate transport and hydrolysis is present in the genomes of all four of the Trichodesmium species sequenced to date.

Deep convection in the Irminger sea forced by the Greenland tip jit

Article Abstract:

The causes for the open-ocean deep convection is explained with reference to the Irminger Sea. Research indicates that occurrence of a low-level atmospheric jet, Greenland tip jet, results in elevated heat flux and strong wind stress curl. Data suggest that Irminger Sea convection flow is different from those operating in the Labrador and the Mediterranean.
