Four climate cycles in Vostok ice core

Article Abstract:

Palaeoclimatologists are likely to obtain significant new information from studying the Russian Vostok ice core, which is now thought to cover the past four glacial-interglacial cycles. International research already undertaken indicates that the ice layers thin linearly with depth below 2,755 mt. At 3,139 mt depth, the ice is 340,000 years old. It will soon be possible to obtain a wide range of climate information which is up to around 400,000 years old.

Protein kinase C-alpha activates Raf-1 by direct phosphorylation

Article Abstract:

A protein kinase C activator (PKCa) directly induces Raf-1 phosphorylation and activation at several sites. Among them is a serine residue at position 499. Raf-1 and PKCa cooperate in transforming NIH3T3 fibroblast cells, a synergy that requires the Ser499 site. Ser259 is a secondary required site. The molecular mechanism and biological consequences of this Raf-1 activation in NIH3T3 cells is discussed.
