Rock-eating fungi

Article Abstract:

Existing views on nutrient uptake from the bulk soil solution may have to be revised following the discovery that symbiotic mycorrhizal hyphae translocate dissolved minerals from the isolated micropores directly to their host plants. Researchers identified micro- to millimolar concentrations of succinate, oxalate, formate, citrate and malate in Swedish bulk soil solutions. The findings challenge the need to add lime to acidified podzolic forest soils in Sweden.

Talent worth nurturing

Article Abstract:

Experts believe that parents and schoolteachers are reluctant to force disabled children into subjects such as science and mathematics that are quite challenging and tough to learn. The American Association for the Advancement of Science's Entry Point programme collaborates with industry and government agencies to identify talented disabled students and places them in paid summer internships.
