Article Abstract:
Rob vander Hilst of the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia has determined the geometric features of oceanic slab introducing below the Tonga-Kermadec island arc. He used the seismic information technique to study the nature of intrusion. His investigation reveals that the geometry of mottle connection is not perfect and the characteristics of the deep slabs are dependent on their tectonic history.

The uniform and low 3He/4He ratios of HIMU basalts as evidence for their origin as recycled materials
Article Abstract:
Geological research using helium isotope analysis shows that high 238 uranium/204 lead samples from between ten and eighteen myr ago have a uniform and low ratio of 6.8 + or - 0.9 R. In comparison, enriched-mantle lavas from different regions have higher signatures of an variable nature. Evidence suggests that these characteristics are typical of the mantle source region and do not involve metasomatism.
