A role of ultrabithorax in morphological differences between Drosophila species

Article Abstract:

In Drosophila non-sensory microtrichiae cover the majority of the posterior second femur, with a naked cuticle close to the proximal end, which varies between and within species. The underlying mechanism of the evolution of morphology are not well understood. It is shown that trichomes on the posterior femur of the Drosophila melanogaster are patterned by the detailed regulation of the Hox gene.

Regulatory evolution of shavenbaby/ovo underlies multiple cases of morphological parallelism

Article Abstract:

Genetic and gene expression studies indicate that changes in the regulation of the shavenbaby/ovo gene leading to morphological convergence in Drosophila melanogaster can independently evolve multiple times in a remotely related D. viridis. Results suggest that some developmental regulators accumulate evolutionary changes, which later lead to morphological parallelism.

Morphological evolution through multiple cis-regulatory mutations at a single gene

Article Abstract:

The genetic basis of a trichome pattern difference between Drosophila species, which has resulted from the evolution of a single gene, shavenbaby (sv), through cis-regulatory changes are examined. The results have shown that the accumulation of multiple small-effect changes at a single locus has caused the evolution of a morphological difference between species.
