A stop-codon mutation in the BRI gene associated with familial British dementia

Article Abstract:

Amyloid proteins appears to be significant in the initiation of neuronal dysfunction, according to research into familial British dementia, an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by progressive dementia, cerebellar ataxia and spasticity. It has been possible to identify a unique 4K protein subunit called ABri from isolated amyloid fibrils. The ABri peptide is deposited as amyloid fibrils causing neuronal dysfunction and dementia.

Nitric oxide and respiration

Article Abstract:

Control of the increase in breathing prompted by a shortage of oxygen could be explained by molecules connected with nitric oxide, which influence respiratory centres at the base of the brain. New research shows that increased breathing is partly controlled by S-nitrosothiols acting in the part of the brainstem known as the nucleus tractus solitarius.

Pathways to neuronal injury and apoptosis in HIV-associated dementia

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the mechanisms which are involved in the induction of dementia by the human immunodeficiency virus-1. The infection of microglia and macrophages by the HIV-1 virus is discussed.
