A tangled problem

Article Abstract:

Researchers would like to know what function, if any, the 'knots' in proteins serve. Although few proteins actually have 'knots', some that do exist are very deep (more than 30 residues on each side of the knot), and some knots exist at the active site of the protein.

Bone recognition mechanism of porcine osteocalcin from crystal structure

Article Abstract:

The X-ray crystal structure of porcine osteocalcin is reported, which reveals a negatively charged protein surface that coordinates five calcium ions in a spatial orientation that is complementary to calcium ions in a hydroxyapatite .

A deeply knotted protein structure and how it might fold

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of computer algorithms which are capable of detecting knots in open chains of proteins. The figure-of-eight knot in acetohydroxy acid isomeroreductase, a plant protein, is discussed.
