AIDS administrators plan crisis meeting over future of AZT

Article Abstract:

Research administrators from Europe and the US Food and Drug Administration plan to meet over the results of an Anglo-French study which showed that the drug zidovudine (AZT) does not effectively retard the progress of AIDS. The study, which was conducted on a total of 1,749 patients over three years, showed that there was no significant difference in the progress of AIDS between AZT-treated and control patients. Various opinions on the results of the study from European and US researchers and from AIDS activist groups are presented.

Support grows for UNESCO but money remains a problem

Article Abstract:

There are indications that Britain and the US will rejoin the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after years of absence. They had left it because they were not satisfied with the management and increasing politicization of UNESCO. Management reforms in the organization have convinced the US to rejoin UNESCO, though Britain is still sceptical about the changes. Both countries feel that it would be difficult for them to pay the large annual fee.
