Abdus Salam (1926-96)

Article Abstract:

Abdus Salam, a physicist who died on Nov. 21, 1996, was a major contributor to the theory of elementary particles known as the Standard Model. He was one of the first to understand the importance of Yang-Mills theory in the characterization of the weak nuclear forces. He and Robert Delbourgo defined a potential violation, by the quantum effects of chiral fermions, of the equivalence principle in general relativity. He played a major role in the establishment of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics.
