Activity budget of white-faced whistling-ducks during winter and spring in northern Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

Article Abstract:

Little is known about the activity budget of white-faced whistling-ducks during winter, although it is known that flight feathers are replaced during this period. A new study investigates energy and time allocation by whistling-ducks in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and determines the importance of wintering areas to nonbreeding birds. The study shows that whistling-ducks spend much of the day and night foraging during winter and early spring, probably because available food is less nutritional than the agricultural grains available to waterfowl in north-temperate regions.

Vulnerability of Canada geese to taxidermy-mounted decoys

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to compare the vulnerability of Canada geese in Maryland to three decoy types: taxidermy-mounted, shell and full-bodied. Results showed that taxidermy-mounted decoys have greater success than shell and full-bodied decoys in attracting geese in shorter distances. However, they have no advantage over the other two in attracting geese from longer distances to within shooting range. Since hunters are more likely to shoot geese at shorter distances, the use of taxidermy-mounted decoys is an effective hunting method.

Factors determining pochard nest predation along a wetland gradient

Article Abstract:

Nests of common pochards in Trebon Basin Biosphere Reserve, Czech Republic were monitored during 1999-2002 to check improving nest success. It was concluded that nesting over water or on islands represented important means of escaping mammalian predation in pochards.
