Adaptation of retinal processing to image contrast and spatial scale

Article Abstract:

Retinal ganglion cells adapt to both image contrast and to spatial correlations within the scene. The adaptation occurs on a scale of seconds and involves 2- to 5-fold changes in the firing rate. Loss of sensitivity after a contrast increase and the recovery after a contrast decrease often follow a different time course. Partial interocular transfer of adaptation indicates that cortical mechanisms also play a role in psychophysical contrast adaptation.

A sensory source for motor variation

Article Abstract:

Visually guided smooth-pursuit eye movements in primates are used as a testing ground for the notion of optimality. The magnitudes of the inferred sensory agree with the observed thresholds for sensory discrimination by perceptual systems, suggesting that the very different neural processes of perception and actions are limited by the same sources of noise.

Efficiency and ambiguity in an adaptive neural code

Article Abstract:

Research into the dynamics of a neural code within the framework of stimulii whose statistical properties are also evolving dynamically is presented. It is suggested that there is a multilayered coding scheme that permits the spike train to transmit information about the stimulus through a number of channels independently.
