After 20 years, prospects remain bleak for minorities in US science

Article Abstract:

Members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, participating in the 161st annual meeting of the Association in Atlanta, express distress at the limited prospects for minorities in science in the US. Blacks receive a very limited percent of doctorates in life and physical sciences, and both blacks and Hispanics are underrepresented in the outflow of science PhDs. Members also express concern at the lack of diversity in the administration sector of science institutes.

US meat inspections may get a strong dose of science

Article Abstract:

The US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) still relies on visual inspection of meat, a system that is already obsolete. The Clinton administration is now planning to adopt modern scientificmethods to ensure effective monitoring and control of microbial contamination of meat. However, concern has been raised that the FSIS is reluctant to change the existing system because of the huge cost of the undertaking.

Ambition and neglect: Science in the Muslim world

Article Abstract:

The poor scientific track record of Islamic countries would lead one into thinking that there is something about Islam inherently inimical to research. Muslim nations interest to invest in science as a broad cultural activity need to extract the right lessons from their glorious past and their politically charged present.
