Against the grain

Article Abstract:

China has been supportive of developing transgenic crops, and has supported university research in this area, but since 2000 it has approved no transgenic food crops for commercial use, and has even published an article from Greenpeace recounting possible ecological hazards posed by such crops. Although the government officially says that its reluctance is based on public concerns and on resistance in export markets such as Western Europe, it seems more likely that the Chinese government is simply stalling the introduction of Western bioengineered crops to give Chinese researchers the time to develop their own transgenic crops.

A little protectionism goes a long way

Article Abstract:

China intends to become a leader in agricultural biotechnology, although regulators are still reluctant to approve commercial planting of transgenic food crops. This might frustrate foreign suppliers of transgenic seed, but China wants its own ag biotech industry to develop.
