Agrin signals at the junction

Article Abstract:

Agrin, a neurally derived protein formed by motor neurons, promotes the aggregation of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) on muscle cells in vitro and is necessary for the formation of neuromuscular junctions in vivo. Agrin deficient mice are unable to move and die in a few hours. AChRs, though present, are unable to aggregate into clusters at nerve-muscle contact sites without agrin. Agrin activity necessitates phosphorylation indicating that it stimulates a protein kinase. The role of a skeletal muscle specific receptor tyrosine kinase, MuSK, in the muscle's response to agrin is discussed.

Fission yeast chk1 protein kinase links the rad checkpoint pathway to cdc2

Article Abstract:

A novel fission yeast protein kinase homologue is involved in cell-cycle arrest when DNA damage has occurred or when unligated DNA is present. The gene encoding this protein is called CHK1, for checkpoint kinase. The ultraviolet sensitivity of rad 1-1 is partially rescued by multiple copies of chk1.

The Cdt1 protein is required to license DNA for replication in fission yeast

Article Abstract:

Cdt1 is needed to license DNA for replication following exit from mitosis. It is able to associate with Cdc18 in cells, it is expressed periodically during the cell cycle, it accumulates within the nucleus and it associates with chromatin.
