'Ambition and impatience' blamed for fraud

Article Abstract:

Francis Collins, the director of the National Center for Human Genome Research, feels that the impatient ambitions of a graduate student, Amitov Hajra, are the reason for the fraud conducted by him. Collins has to wholly or partially withdraw five research papers due to the fraud. Kenneth Ryan, chair of a national commission that recommended tighter regulation, criticizes the type of supervisions students get. According to him, such incidents results in loss of public trust and formal quality control should be implemented in the laboratories.

Cash rivalry 'fosters neglect of postdoc supervision.'

Article Abstract:

Speakers at an international meeting at George Washington University emphasized the intense competition for limited funds for scientific research is discouraging many scientists from mentoring post-doctoral students. They noted that many scientists have begun to perceive their students as potential rivals to limited scientific funds. Intense competition has also resulted in a significant decline in academic civility and observance of scientific decorum.

'Beware of hype,' AIDS conference told

Article Abstract:

Scientists at the 1996 International Conference on AIDS, Canada, unanimously voiced their concern over the euphoria on an early cure to the pandemic. The present combination therapies only suppress the virus and do not eradicate it from the body. The health and education programs can check the HIV infections in any circumstances as revealed by UN statistics on the disease's status in Uganda and Thailand.
