An occupancy modeling approach to evaluating a palm springs ground squirrel habitat model

Article Abstract:

Surveys are conducted on ground squirrels to obtain unbiased estimates of occupancy while incorporating ground squirrel detection probabilities and testing the Scientific Advisory Committee habitat model prediction that the ground squirrel equally occupies all modeled areas. It is suggested that conservation efforts focus on protecting and enhancing the mesquite hummock/ dune system that has disappeared since 1950s due to agricultural and urban development and the lower water tables.

Modeling of site occupancy dynamics for northern spotted owls, with emphasis on the effects of barred owls

Article Abstract:

Annual variation, potential time trends, and the effect of barred owl presence on site occupancy of northern spotted owls on three study areas in Oregon are examined using open population site occupancy models. Further decline in the proportion of sites occupied by spotted owls is expected as the barred owl presence is increasing within the range of northern spotted owls.
