Pulsar spins from an instability in the accretion shock of supernovae

Article Abstract:

A report about a robust instability of the stalled accretion shock in core-collapse supernovae that is able to generate a strong rotational flow in the vicinity of the accreting proto-neutron star is presented. The observation suggest that sufficient angular momentum which is deposited on the photo-neutron star generate a final spin period which provides a new mechanism for the generation of neutron star spin and weakens the assumed correlation between the rotational periods of supernova progenitor cores and pulsar spin.

The new pulsar next door

Article Abstract:

Simon Johnston and colleagues discovered a new pulsar, PSR J0437-4715, at approximately 400 light-years distance using a Parkes radio telescope in Australia. This discovery was part of a systematic survey for pulsars that has covered approximately 1/6 of the celestial sphere. PSR J0437-4715 supports theories on pulsars' population density and galactic birthrates.
