Arthropod phylogeny based on eight molecular loci and morphology

Article Abstract:

Links between Arthropoda have been assessed on the basis of a synthesis of all well sampled molecular loci and of a detailed data set of developmental, gene-order, ultrastructural and morphological features. The optimal 'total evidence' cladogram was found to back up the crustacean-hexapod clade and to suggest monophyly of Myriapoda and Mandibulata.

Sum of the arthropod parts

Article Abstract:

Four research projects have shed new light on the interconnections between the main subphyla of arthropods. It has been demonstrated that the Hexapoda and Crustacea are sister taxa, with hexapods sometimes 'nested' in the Crustacea. The Chelicerata and Myriapoda have been found to not be sister taxa.

Animal roots ad shoots

Article Abstract:

Molecular evidence is used to propose a radical rearrangement of animal phyla. Traditional trees group together phyla of bilaterally symmetrical animals that posses a body cavity lined with mesodermal tissue, the coelom, as Coelomata.
