Assessments during shell exchanges by the hermit crab Clibanarius vittatus: the complete negotiator

Article Abstract:

Hermit crabs primarily exchange shells for mutual benefits and behave in the manner according to the negotiation model of resource exchange. Clibanarius vittatus crabs use information on the size of other shells during initial assessment. The relative size difference between the crabs determines the duration of rapping, once an initiating crab begins the exchange interaction on the other shells. Individual crabs in a poorly fitting shell most often examine another crab with a poorly fitting shell.

Responses to predation risk: Alternative strategies in the crab Heterozius rotundifrons

Article Abstract:

Heterozius rotundifrons, the New Zealand endemic crab displays an effective antipredator behavior of fully extending all limbs for a number of seconds or even several minutes if presented with single sensory inputs but fully extends all limbs for a shorter period when chemical and visual cues are presented simultaneously. Crabs showed similar extended durations of the limb-extended state for all magnitudes of single modality treatments that were above threshold.

Contingencies in the behaviour of the crab Heterozius rotundifrons

Article Abstract:

The responses of individual intertidal crabs, Heterozius rotundifrons, to stimuli in the laboratory have been investigated. The extremely contingent nature of the behaviour of these crabs is highlighted.
