Assortative preferences for stripes in danios

Article Abstract:

The wild-type zebra fish (Danio rerio) was presented with two artificially selected Danio rerio strains with reduced stripe expression as well as the stripeless Danio albolineatus and the striped Danio nigrofasciatus with simultaneous choices between synthetic, computer-animated shoals of stripeless and striped Danio. Each species and strain of Danio preferred the phenotypes that most resembled its own with a strong preference for striped stimuli by fish with dark-stripe phenotype, and strong preference for no stripes by fish lacking stripes.

The vocal sac as a visual cue in anuran communication: an experimental analysis using video playback

Article Abstract:

The role of the vocal sac in determining female response to the male advertisement display was examined by adding playback of computer-generated video animations. The study shows that the vocal sac serves as the visual cue, is a salient part of the advertisement signal in at least some circumstances and it may account for the diversity of vocal sac colors and morphologies found in anurans.

The role of sexual selection in maintaining a color polymorphism in the pygmy swordtail, Xiphophorus pygemaeus

Article Abstract:

A series of behavioral experiments that decoupled body color from possible correlates, to detect female mating preferences for each morph and differences in male reproductive behavior, are conducted. Studies showed reduced preferences for conspicuous traits in Nacimiento population.
