Astronomers win satellite phone curb...

Article Abstract:

Mobile telephone company Iridium has agreed to provide 'quiet time' for facilities in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Britain, for seven hours each night and two weekend days per month. However radioastronomers believe that the agreement does not cover legitimate time-sharing and have argued that Iridium's satellite system was designed without regard to its polluting effect. Overspill from satellite downlinks into adjacent 1,612-megahertz bands reserved for radioastronomers, drowns out weak deep-space signals.

Astronomers fight incursion of phones into radio frequencies

Article Abstract:

Radio astronomers believe that transmissions by mobile telephone companies will have a catastrophic affect on the reception of radio signals at low frequencies. The World Radiocommunication Conference-97 run by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has agreed to consider sharing of the spectrum above 70 GHz, but radio astronomers are seeking watertight rules on overspill transmission.

French astronomers to rank facilities

Article Abstract:

French astronomers will undertake a scientific ranking of ground and space-based projects to help meet target cuts totalling 20 million French francs. The move is part of a coordinated strategy for astronomy in France and may become a model for Europe. The meeting of around 200 astronomers will be organized by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).
