Asymmetrical turning during spermatophore transfer in the male smooth newt

Article Abstract:

Male smooth newts tend to turn left when they are mating and during transfer of spermatophore. This is related to male lateralization rather than characteristics of female newts. The bias toward turning left tends to decrease the more spermatophores are deposited, with little bias noted by the third spermatophore deposit. The female newt is no more likely to pick up spermatophore if the male has a left bias. This bias is not found among great crested newts.

Artificial color mutation: do red-painted great tits experience increased or decreased predation?

Article Abstract:

Artificially red-painted mutant great tits, Parus major, exhibit novelty effect and experience increased predation by nesting sparrowhawks, Accipiter nisus. The predation rate for brightly red colored fledglings is 38% higher than that for tits of another color. The proportion of red tits taken by the sparrowhawks varies, but there is a high preference for red tits irrespective of the breeding time of tits and the hawk pairs involved.
