Partnership for a shrimp

Article Abstract:

Fourth grade students of Brookside School in San Anselmo, California, have formed a club to project the plight of endangered species, especially the California freshwater shrimp. It is one of the most unique development in the Partners for Wildlife project of the Fish and Wildlife Service. The recovery plans of the students aim at providing a safer habitat for the shrimps in cooperation with other conservation groups. Initiative measures include fencing the creek by planting riparian trees, shrubs, and native plants.

From Lao hills to California valley

Article Abstract:

Zang Moua was seven years old when she and her extended family escaped from war-torn Laos and emigrated to the US. At first, she found the climate intolerable and the people unfriendly. However Zang did not want to be welfare dependent like other refugees so she worked extra hard to excel in school. She is an accounting student and works at a counseling center for refugees. Zang's story is proof of the importance of language and education in the assimilation of refugees.
