Badge size in collared flycatchers predicts outcome of male competition over territories
Article Abstract:
Nest site contests were conducted with male collared flycatchers to determine the influence of colorful badges on sexually selected contests. The only morphological factor observed that may affect dispute outcomes was the size of the Ficedula albicollis white forehead patch. Winners of the contests were also found to acquire females faster. Results suggest that the white forehead patch functions as a badge during sexually selected contests.
