Balancing foraging and reproduction in the male harbour seal, an aquatically mating pinniped

Article Abstract:

The harbour seal mates aquatically and has to balance the competing demands of reproduction and foraging during the breeding season. A study conducted with harbour seals on the beach of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, using time-depth recorders designed to analyse their dives, is presented. The results show that adult male harbour seals forage more frequently and dive deeper during the pre-mating period. Males may maximize their encounters with females by increasing the time they spend in shallow water near the breeding colony.

Sex differences in the diving behaviour of a size-dimorphic capital breeder: the grey seal

Article Abstract:

The body size dimorphism and sex differences in the relative costs and benefits associated with acquiring energy for reproduction are used to describe the evolution of sex differences in foraging behavior. The extents to which these factors influences sex differences in the diving behavior of a size-dimorphic, capital breeder, the grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, are examined.

Individuality in harp seal, Phoca groenlandica, pup vocalizations

Article Abstract:

Harp seals aggregate in large colonies on pack ice during the whelping season. Vocalizations, sex and age class for 91 individuals was recorded at whelping patches in the Greenland Sea. Pups produced three call types, tonal, pulsed, and a combination of the two.
