Banding together for the Florida grasshopper sparrow

Article Abstract:

Federal, state and non-government agencies in Florida have formed a partnership to protect the grasshopper sparrow from extinction. The bird is an endemic species that has been included in the list of Endangered species due to the rapid decline in its population. Monitoring reports indicate that the species only has seven nesting sites, mostly in public lands. The largest population is found in the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission's Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area in Osceola County and in the US Air Force's Avon Park Range in Highlands and Polk counties.

Ring-necked pheasant population genetic structure

Article Abstract:

The ring-necked pheasant is an important game bird but little is known about its genetic variability because of the unavailability of appropriate analytic tools. A new study investigates the genetic structure of 34 ring-necked pheasants taken from five different habitats in eastern Iowa. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA assay is used to test for genetic subdivision between populations. The study indicates a consistent trend towards genetic subdivison and suggests that small-scale geographic separation can cause genetic isolation.
