Behavioural and hormonal responses to capture stress in the male red-sided garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis pairetalis

Article Abstract:

Capture stress in male red-sided garter snakes was measured for behavioural and hormonal responses. There was no suppression of mating behaviour, but capture stress led to a significant rise in plasma levels of corticosterone and a significant fall in plasma levels of testosterone. It is indicated that they separate their behavioural stress response from their hormonal stress response to maximize reproductive opportunities.

Conspecific trailing behavior of red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, in the natural environment

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of pheromone trails by adult red-sided garter snakes when locating mates. The use of other mechanisms for the location of overwintering hibernacula is discussed.

Alternative male mating tactics in garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis

Article Abstract:

The alternative mating strategies adopted by the males, especially by the Garter-snakes in two situations, is discussed. It is concluded that mate-searching tactics and intensity of courtship is more in male Garter-snakes when compared to their own competitive abilities and spatial heterogeneity in mating opportunities.
