Bill would force journals to follow misconduct rules

Article Abstract:

The House voted to require the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to draw up guidelines for discouraging scientific journals from publishing research based on misconduct. The provision, which the House tacked onto a bill approving National Institutes of Health programs, will exclude any journal from the NLM's database that fails to print retractions of questionable articles. However, some journal editors are criticizing the proposal as unwarranted, ambiguous and likely to inhibit self-regulation among the journals.

Academy approves, critics still cry foul

Article Abstract:

The National Research Council reports that the existing methods of comparing DNA fingerprints are accurate when conducted in accordance with correct procedure. This report, entitled 'DNA Technology in Forensic Science,' may bolster the use of DNA fingerprints as legal evidence but is unlikely to reassure critics who contend that the technique is not trustworthy. These critics point to data from population genetics indicating that DNA fingerprints may lead to mistaken identifications.

Journals as policeman

Article Abstract:

Congress is developing a bill to discourage the publication of fraudulent or questionable research by refusing to allow the National Library of Medicine to index any scientific journal that does not follow regulations, particularly with regard to publishing retractions of erroneous research. However, the difficulty of defining a retraction in a way that fairly categorizes all cases and uncertainty about how to credit research will complicate the bill's enforcement.
