Biologists aims to ease the pain for entrepreneurs

Article Abstract:

Biologist and inventor of the automated DNA sequencer, Leroy Hood has helped to find 13 companies, including one of the world's top biotechnology firms, Amgen. His knowledge of the potential pitfalls faced by scientists making the transition from lab to commerce has led him to set up Accelerator Corporation, a venture that Hood believes offers a fresh approach to technology transfer, to accelerate early-stage discoveries and push successful ones on to the next stage of funding.

The large facility, Large Hadron Collider coming up at CERN, the European particle-physics lab near Geneva, would offer particle physicists the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the early Universe. The facility, which would generate a large quantity of data to be distributed among three tiers of computing, centers, a federation of high-capacity global data grids, would generate a number of job opportunities at the interface of computing and physics.

In the battle against infectious disease, mathematical models that incorporate ecological data are starting to be deployed on the front line. The risk of disease transmission from the availability of suitable mosquito breeding habitats in case of Dengue fever and the degree of immunity to the virus in the regional human population can be predicted.
