Bird use of an experimental strip intercropping system in northeast Iowa

Article Abstract:

Experimental strip intercropping in sustainable agriculture affects the bird density, diversity of species and nesting success. Bird density increased with strip intercropping and behavior observed includes foraging, courtship, territorial defense and self-maintenance. Nesting success, however, was affected by field operations, predation and cowbird parasitism. The strips are, in effect, ecological traps since they attract residents, but lower nesting success.

Grassland bird use of riparian filter strips in southeast Iowa

Article Abstract:

The U. S. Department of Agriculture under its Continuous Enrollment Conservation Reserve Program has actively promoted establishment of conservation buffers. Even though these program are intended to benefit wildlife in addition to protecting soil and water resources, benefits to grassland birds might be compromised by narrow widths, presence of woody vegetation, and high predation pressure.

Short-term bird response to harvesting switchgrass for biomass in Iowa

Article Abstract:

Research on Iowa agriculture indicates that switchgrass crops used for biomass production provide breeding habitat for certain grassland birds, and that a blend of both harvested and nonharvested crop fields would better benefit bird populations than a total or partial harvest of all fields.
