Bird communities associated with harvested hardwood stands containing residual trees

Black Woodpecker nest sites: characteristics, selection, and reproductive success

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning an evaluation of the threat caused to the Black Woodpecker by forest management. 501 nests in 457 excavated tree holes in southcentral Scandinavia were studied for reproductive success.

Black woodpecker use of habitats and feeding substrates in a managed Scandinavian forest

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates whether modern forestry practices in Scandinavia threaten the black woodpecker population, which was once thought to be in long-term decline. A 10,000 ha area of managed boreal forest in southcentral Scandinavia is examined and the habitats and feeding substrates of the woodpecker are observed. The study suggests that forest management in regions where snow depths are moderate creates foraging habitats for woodpeckers, which appear to favour young plantations where there is an abundance of wood ants, their main food source.
