Body fat and time of year interact to mediate dispersal behavior in ground squirrels

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the influence of body fat and time of year in mediating hibernation behavior in ground squirrels. Body fat was evaluated by determining the electrical conductivity of the body. The animals were also anesthetized with methoxyflurane to analyze their body composition. Results showed that the ontogeny of mass and fat gain in juvenile male Spermophilus beldingi was influenced by a seasonal time-keeping mechanism.

Siblicide revisited in the spotted hyaena: Does it conform to obligate or facultative models?

Article Abstract:

Aggression in the spotted hyaena Crocuta crocuta siblings can be intense and occasionally lethal. It has been proposed that siblicide routinely occurs in half of all spotted hyaena litters. An alternative to this model is proposed, suggesting that siblicide is not as common as previously thought and occurs only if resources are insufficient to sustain two cubs.

Functions and qualifications of play behaviour in juvenile Belding's ground squirrels

Article Abstract:

The functional significance of the play behavior in free-living juvenile Belding's ground squirrels, Spermophilus beldingi, are examined. The play behavior and motor development during the play period influence important events in the early lives of S. beldingi that may influence long-term reproductive success.
