Breed effects

Article Abstract:

Estimation of breed effects, reciprocal cross-differences and individual heterosis for growth rate, carcass traits, and pork quality was performed on Duroc and Landrace pigs. Growth and pork quality were not significantly influenced by breed. Carcass composition was highly affected, with Duroc sires producing progeny with less backfat, larger longissimus muscle area and more intramuscular fat. The reciprocal cross-differences in carcass traits support the apparent advantage of using Duroc terminal sires. Only pork color and intramuscular fat showed unfavorable heterosis.

Characterization of lipid in loin and bacon from finishing pigs fed full-fat soybeans or tallow

Article Abstract:

The effect of a diet containing extruded full-fat soybeans (FFS) on the ratio of polyunsaturated fat and saturated fat (P:S ratio) in pork fat was investigated. Pigs in the three- or six-week finishing period were given diets with different concentrations of FFS or tallow. The results showed that pigs fed with a 20% FFS diet for six weeks incorporated more polyunsaturated fatty acids than saturated fatty acids into bacon and loin tissues. The results indicate that dietary lipid can affect the P:S ratio of pork.

Effect of feeding finishing pigs extruded full-fat soybeans on performance and pork quality

Article Abstract:

Finishing pigs were fed with diets supplemented with different concentrations of extruded full-fat soybeans (FFS) and tallow to determine the effect of added dietary fat on performance and pork quality. No adverse effects on performance were detected in pigs fed with FFS or tallow. An increase in lipid oxidation was observed which was directly related to FFS level in the diet, duration of diet treatment and meat storage time. These effects were small, however, and were not detected by a taste panel.
