Bringing up baby: for some marine creatures, reproducing and raising young is a complex affair

Article Abstract:

Marine invertebrates engage in very complex reproductive behavior. In some reproduction happens by fission. In others motion may generate a leaving behind of parts of the pedal disc. These parts then regenerate. Some sea anemones are hermaphroditic, with sperm being produced before eggs. Asexual reproduction is common in sea anemones. Marine vertebrates and invertebrates covedred include sea stars, horseshoe crabs, rock crabs and moon snails.
