Brown and black bear density estimation in Alaska using radiotelemetry and replicated mark-resight techniques

Article Abstract:

The management of bear populations requires accurate density estimates but this can be difficult to achieve and estimates are often inaccurate. Details of a study designed to estimate brown and black bear populations in Alaska using capture-mark-resight techniques are presented. Automatically-triggered cameras were used at bait stations to obtain resightings of unmarked and radio-marked bears in 17 separate areas. A maximum-likelihood estimator was used to reconcile temporary bear movements out of the search areas.

Predation and survival of white-tailed deer fawns in northcentral New Brunswick

Article Abstract:

Little is known about the reasons for the decline in white-tailed deer numbers in New Brunswick, but loss of habitat, predation and severe winters are among the possible causes. A new study of deer in northern New Brunswick seeks to determine survival and cause-specific mortality rates for fawns. The study shows that coyote predation is the main cause of fawn mortality throughout the year and supports the theory that gray wolves have been replaced by coyotes as predators of fawn and young deer.

Nest and brood survival of lesser prairie-chickens in west central Kansas

Article Abstract:

The effect of habitat use and other sources of variation on survival of lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) and greater prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) nests and broods are evaluated. Daily nest and brood-survival probabilities were a function of a quadratic time trend, and both declined with seasonal progression. Results from the study could be used to formulate management strategies to improve nest and brood survival.
