Brussels reshapes science panels after BSE criticism

Article Abstract:

The European Commission aims to reform its health and food advisory committees to improve the way scientific advice is gathered and enhance public confidence. Advisory committees have been accused of focusing more on economic issues than consumer safety. The public health and food committees have been transferred to the consumer directorate from the agriculture and industry directorates, but the agriculture and industry directorates will retain responsibility for food safety policy and law proposals. External experts will sit on the advisory committees and minutes from the meetings will be published.

Occupational hazards

Article Abstract:

Palestinian professors at Bethlehem University on the West Bank feel that the Israeli-Palestinian peace has failed to produce the necessary liberalization of border control. They have difficulty obtaining travel permits, which are awarded in an arbitrary manner, to confer with Israeli colleagues at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. It is easier for Palestinian professors to travel to Europe, though more time consuming, than to gain the same experience 20 minutes away in Israel.

Global R&D spread clouds local analyses

Article Abstract:

A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) shows that foreign investment in the US rose to $15.6 billion between 1977 and 1994, with the majority of the increase by European companies. The growth in foreign R&D investment has led to difficulties in assessing 'national' industrial R&D, and the report challenges the broadly held believe that R&D has escaped globalization.
