Building the Midwest's future

Article Abstract:

The three upper-Midwest states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota are better known for agriculture and manufacturing than for science and technology but their public research universities are the biggest recipients of US federal research funding. University and state officials have worked to raise their profiles, connect with the local business community and create three overlapping science hubs, in an effort to build up their research infrastructure and for striking partnerships.

Striving for excellence

Article Abstract:

The German government has started an 'excellence initiative' that will reward universities with particularly convincing concepts in collaborative research and postgraduating training in order to establish the German research institute in the top global tier. The competition has forced every university to look into their strengths and weaknesses and it will also help them nurture promising areas of research and develop necessary collaborations across disciplines.
