CAT eyes the early universe

Article Abstract:

Astronomers at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory in Cambridge, England, have used a Cosmic Anisotropy Telescope to detect microwave background fluctuations on a miniscule angular scale of 20 arcminutes. Decline in amplitude of Doppler peak in the fluctuation spectrum may not be in accordance with models assuming a low-density universe. The level of dominant peak is associated with the size of the horizon. The COBRAS/SAMBA space mission slated for launch by the European Space Agency, in 2004, will lead to measurement of cosmological parameters with 1% accuracy.

A distant but absorbing youth

Article Abstract:

The discovery of a Lyman alpha absorption line in the spectrum of the quasar BRI1202-0725 indicates a disk galaxy in its initial stages of formation. Spectroscopic studies revealing trace levels of heavy elements and a continuum object with red shift between 4.0 and 4.7 validate the finding. Damped Lyman-alpha systems are formed by the presence of a gas cloud, with a hydrogen atom column density of 10 to the twenty-first power/cm squared, in front of a quasar. Arguments against the Lyman-alpha absorption theory are given.

An extrasolar giant planet in a close triple-star system

Article Abstract:

The detection of an unusual hot Jupiter orbiting the primary star of a triple stellar system, HD 188753 is reported. The planet has an orbital period of 3.35 days and a minimum mass of 1.14 times that of Jupiter.
