CH+ in the Red Rectangle

Article Abstract:

The Red Rectangle biconical nebula contains a star at its center whose spectra indicate the presence of CH+ molecules. Although CH+ had previously been detected spectroscopically in interstellar clouds, this is the first time that this molecule has been found in a nebula's spectra. Comparison of observed wavelengths with laboratory wavelengths of CH+ confirmed the detection. The discovery suggests that diffuse band carriers cause the interstellar clouds to contain large quantities of CH+.

Highly ionized gas in the nucleus of the active galaxy MCG-6-30-15

Article Abstract:

Highly ionized oxygen has been found in the nucleus of the active or Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15 by spectral analysis. Absorption at 0.8 keV in the galaxy's spectrum indicated the presence of spectral absorber in the form of ionized gas. Though hard to measure at other wavelengths, this absorbing gas probably accounts for the X-ray opacity of the galaxy's nucleus. Moreover, this gas modifies the X-rays that are emitted and causes flux-associated alterations in spectral shape.

An oxygen-rch dust disk surrounding an evolved star in the Red Rectangle

Article Abstract:

The Red Rectangle is a prototype of carbon-rich reflection nebulae around low-mass stars in the final phases of evolution. Infrared observations of of the Red Rectangle reveal that oxygen-rich material is present in the circumbinary disk. The oxygen rich dust has properties similar to those of dusty disks around young stars.
