Scientific societies build better nations

Article Abstract:

Science has played an integral part in Western culture for many generations. It is now time for the scientific community to seek to boost the role of science in developing countries too. It is clear that scientific societies in developing countries can make a significant contribution to nation building. These societies are in a strong position to foster a culture supportive of science- and technology-based development through public initiatives and other approaches.

Science wars and the need for respect and rigour

Article Abstract:

The growing 'constructivist' movement within the scientific community contends that science results from social processes as much as from controlled experimentation. A recent hoax perpetrated by physicist Alan Sokal effectively demonstrated that scientific research is vulnerable to shoddy thinking and blatant misinterpretation of research findings. However, this is not reason enough to dismiss the contributions of all science studies to scientific progress.
